Ray, an environmental activist and writer, calls herself a “pilgrim on a journey toward a sustainable life.” At a recent Earth Day gathering Ray shared, “…one of our biggest challenges is figuring our how to repair what has been damaged and then learn to live without destroying humanity, community and the atmosphere.” Janisse is the award-winning author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood. This highly praised book combines elements of ecology and autobiography examining the vanishing cracker culture in Georgia and explaining how a dying ecosystem can negatively affect a rural community. In 2005, Ray published a third book, Pinhook: Finding Wholeness in a Fragmented Land. It chronicles the restoration of Pinhook Swamp in south Georgia. Through the efforts of Ray and other environmentalists, the swamp is now a protected wildlife corridor. |
